History
The George Hotel stands on the grounds of a former fish market and what was then known back in the 1800’s as The Eagle Inn,
part of which can still be seen from the hotel car park.
Built by James Ford and Son, the George Hotel Montrose consisted of luxuries back in those days such as fine ornate windows, which still exist, a billiard room, two parlours and conveniently arranged
working lavatories.
The windows were patented by Hird and Ford and are still in place today. The hotel consisted of five bedrooms with the rest of the
rooms making up coffee rooms, smoking rooms and restaurants.
Things have changed since then but not everything. The George Hotel Montrose now has twenty-four en-suite bedrooms, a restaurant, bar lounge and a function suite all of which have been modernised, but a lot of the original features such as the windows, ceiling roses and original staircase have been incorporated and still remain
today.
